PROTESTS CARRIED OUT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS OVER FEES HIKE

Students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have engaged themselves in a series of protests demanding that the recently hiked acceptance fee be reduced. The school has been shut down from any usual activities as a result of this. According to Sahara Reporters:

''Students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have blocked entrances to the school this morning, preventing vehicular movements in or outside of the campus in protest against tuition fee hike.
The students are protesting against the sudden imposition of course registration fee.
The protesting students claimed the management shut the school portal against registration and began demanding for N10,000, which again increased to N15,000 and N20,000 progressively in the last few days..
One of the protest leaders told Saharareporters that poor technical capability of students’ portal and the attitude of the personnel at the institution's IT center  caused delay in students registration for a new semester.
The students are singing protest songs, accusing the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rahman Bello of corruption.
They said the ban on their Students Union, since 2005 will not hinder them from protest action against oppressive policies of the school management.
"If they do not immediately re-open the portal for registration", one of the protesting students said, "this will be a springboard to demand lifting the unacceptable ban on the students’ union government.”

SECESSIONIST BIAFRA GROUP STORMS ENUGU RADIO STATION

Photo: Members of the BZF

A Biafran secessionist group known as the 'Biafra Zionists Federation', on Thursday had some of it's members attack a radio station in Enugu state; the Enugu State Broadcasting Service (ESBS). They left as casualties a Sergeant guarding the station and two of their members who tried to flee the scene as their plan had been foiled. According to Premium Times:
'' The group planned to seize the government station to have its leader broadcast a speech re-affirming his declaration of the Biafra Republic last year.''
Their leader, a lawyer by the name of Benjamin Onwuka had sometime in 2013 declared himself the leader of one Biafra Republic.
For now matters are being handled by the proper authorities as can be confirmed from Vanguard.

Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar last night said members of the Biafra Zionist Federation, BZF, who invaded the Enugu State Broadcasting Service, ESBS, yesterday morning were on a mission to topple the government.
Abubakar spoke while parading the 13 members of the federation including their leader, Benjamin Igwe Onwuka at the state police headquarters.
Apart from Onwuka, Abubakar said other members of the federation arrested included Paulinus Uzoegbu, Michael Oleinya, Ndubuisi Nnamchi, Bethrand Obiekwe, Kelvin Ekeh, Abraham Ugwu, Chukwuma Alogius, Ijaga Sampson, Josephat Nwodo, Nwonu Fidelis and Uduma Uduma.
The commissioner said: “When they went to the ESBS, they gained entrance into the studio and wanted the the workers to give them access to make a live broadcast to the people of Nigeria.
“In the broadcast they had on a CD rom where the details of what they wanted to tell members of the public.
They made a summary of what they had on the CD rom, on a sheet of paper and the highlight of it are; an appeal calling for all boys in Obiagu, (Enugu) to come out, all boys from Ogui (Enugu) to come out, all boys in Enugu State to come out; they also asked students to come out, those people with KekeNapep (tricycles) to come out.
They wanted to order all businesses closed today (yesterday); all schools to be closed, all markets to be closed and all government officials to surrender all property in their possession before mid-day. You can see these people were on a mission of trying to over throw the government and it is something that we will never tolerate.
“Recall that in March this year, they had attacked Government House, Enugu. We had earlier declared their leader (Onwuka) wanted. The same group of  BZF led by their leader, Benjamin  Onwuka invaded the ESBS  with the intention that after the broadcast, they will set the place ablaze.
“They carried with them a lot of arms, machetes, 25 litres of petrol, 46 empty beer bottles and one BZF flag and some CDs. The purpose of going there with petrol and bottles, you know when you put petrol inside a bottle and shake it and throw it into a building, it will inflame. They went there also with guns because when the policemen confronted them, they shot a sergeant and killed him and in the process of trying to prevent them from setting the place ablaze, they also had a casualty, one of them was shot dead. About 13 of them were arrested including the leader, Benjamin Onwuka.”
Abubakar then warned that any group of persons or individuals planning to foment trouble in whatever form that would cause breach of peace to desist from doing so, as it would not be tolerated.
Efforts made to speak with the suspects were rebuffed as the Commissioner insisted that doing so “will mean giving them opportunity to say what they wanted to announce in the live broadcast.”

LITERATURE TUESDAY: EXCERPT FROM THE NOVEL, The Goat BY EMMANUEL IFEDIATA

One day, Strauss took Wesley to a bush bar called Street where he introduced the latter to some adventurers in the hood. They welcomed him warmly unlike the Black Axe frat who emphasized cultism over friendship. In the spirit of the times, members of the Black Axe were the chief nemesis of the Vikings. They led a secluded existence and loathed non-initiates with exclusivist arrogance. They wanted all Jewman to fade and, therefore, would have absolutely nothing to do with non-Sevens. The pioneers of campus fraternities initiated the organizations with the intention of fostering brotherhood with a demonstrable commitment to the pursuit of noble ideals. However, sometime even before the grand conception could realize a full birth, the plan suffered a miscarriage of sorts, leaving behind its trail a harvest of blood and gore.

It was at the bar called Street that Wesley first encountered Nappa the Red, a bloodied, colossal guy of about six and twenty. While he drank a beer sitting next to Strauss, who had told his family that he, Wesley was a Noron, Nappa the Red was sighted from a distance. A drunken bagger darted out of the hut beer parlour shouting “make way! Make way!” as Nappa approached. He was looking into the sky as he advanced; he wasn’t looking at anybody. When he was close, the others hailed him noisily. One of them released a gunshot salute and Nappa the Red, Strike chief of the Vikings, jazzed into the Bush bar like a big masqueraded. Nappa was a little pot-bellied from binge drinking and intimidatingly massive in build. His eyes were bloodshot, his hair was neatly barbed and his jaw was scantily bearded which made it look more like whiskers than beards. He pinned all the nautical points at the bar called Street in greeting. He came across Wesley and they shook hands but not in the manner of fist locking and pinning of thumbs. It was a rough slapping of palms and a snapping of the third finger.

Yes. The bar called Street was the kind of place where cultists gathered to while away time and make merry. This was where they smoked, drank, rubbed minds together, argued incisively and often disagreed with one another and sometimes, out of being too possessed with ruggedity and rum, shot and threw one another overboard. Remember, it was called Street. And in street, anything goes. Everyone had to be on guard at all times, not only against a rival cult group but also against a fellow adventurer.

VENDETTA; BOKO HARAM KILL 40 VIGILANTES IN KALABALGE

The dreaded Boko Haram sect has reportedly killed 40 villagers in Kalabalge, Borno state. This situation came about as a result of the repelling of the sects members by the local vigilantes during one of their various raids. The sect also left many properties razed and destroyed putting instilling fear into the minds of those who took it upon themselves to try and stop their ever-spreading menace. According to Sahara reporters:

A horde of armed Boko Haram terrorists today descended on Kalabalge, a community in Borno State whose vigilantes had recently repelled an attack by members of the extremist Islamist sect—and left a horrific scene, with at least 40 dead people and widespread destruction.
A security agent and a community source told SaharaReporters that more than 500 Boko Haram fighters arrived in the town in numerous pick-up vans and were able to overwhelm local hunters and vigilante members within the community.
Today’s attack by Boko Haram originated in Gamboru Ngala, a border town between Nigeria and Cameroon, and lasted for several hours. Our security agent source disclosed that the religious militants also attacked Ankulkule, Chekobe, Izge and five other communities. The source told SaharaReporters that some of the villages were completely burnt, adding that most of those who survived the horrendous attacks had fled to Cameroon to seek refuge.
About a week ago, a group of local hunters and youth in Kalabalge had ambushed a contingent of Boko Haram terrorists who arrived in the village to wreak havoc. The vigilante group killed scores of the militants, arrested a few, and send others scurrying into the bush to escape.
A member of the village told SaharaReporters that, having resisted and repelled Boko Haram, members of the community expected the Islamist group to launch a vengeful attack. “Our vigilantes were ready, waiting for them, day and night,” the source said. “We knew that soldiers cannot protect us, so our fighters were ready. But they came in such large number that we could not withstand them today.”
